This journal is friends only. Hey, the worst thing that can possibly happen to a person is that they lose their privacy. Trust me.
Leave a comment to be added. Maybe.

I don't friend everyone back. I'm sorry, I just don't. I have a just-barely-manageable flist to sort through every day and I can't add everyone. Regardless, all of the important fandomy stuff is public. You don't need me to friend you if you want to read my fics, see my icons or get my fic recs.

Most everything here is combined under (old) memories and new tags.

[Icons]
My icons can be found here under tags, here on wallflower. Wallflower also has a syndicated feed if you just want the straight goods delivered to your friends page.

[Fanfiction]
Fanfiction is generally organized by series, so tags for that will bring up both fics for that series as well as any entries where I babble on about a particular show. Fics are posted on my website, here, here, here, and on ff.net.

[Fic Recs]
I post links to things I think you might want to read. Well, things I want to read, at any rate. The website for that is here, and all fic-rec posts are tagged here or here.

People whose fic recs I read include [info]tomomichi and [info]rec_a_day.

[Book Recs]
Book recs can be found at [info]fucking_read. Join! It's fun!

[Resources]
I keep track of all the icons I'm stealing, brushes, wallpapers, downloads, screencaps etc-- all of it under the cut.

I'll post about Polaris later this week. Right now clients have requested several non-sensical things that I have to work on. (Seriously. As in completely without reason or sense.)

Jen: I got into the program! I'm moving to BC in September!
MK: Whoa, congratulations!
Jen: Move with me.
MK: What?
Jen: There are websites in Vancouver!

Congratulations, Jen, you're going to kick some serious ass.
On a side note, we went out for a congratulatory dinner at Insomnia, and it was so hot out that just after our food arrived I had to stumble to the bathroom and be sick, and then we had to get take-out and cab home instead. Good news: Jen watched Real Genius which I feel is appropriate after being accepted to a prestigious grad school program on the other side of the country, and loved it. (Obviously.)

This time I woke up sleeping on my wiimote and wii-nunchuck. They somehow made their way into bed with me and wrapped around one of my pillows. I guess I should be glad I didn't strangle myself in my sleep, but mostly I'm curious about which game I was playing in my dream.

Polaris is this weekend and I'll be there if any of you are in the area. Drop me an e-mail and maybe I'll see you guys at the David Hewlett thing or something. Actually there are approximately one million interesting things being discussed. Here's where I need a time machine.
Actually I dreamt I already went and Kate Hewlett made me feel bad about the environment, but Nathan Fillion stepped in and saved the day.

Transformers:

Jen: So... this movie is about robots who want to have sex with that guy?
MK: It would have been better if there were less "sexy time" and more robots. And if the robots were less sexualized. And even then they were sexualized in an unsexy way. I don't understand.
Jen: The only people who deserve love on this movie are the CG artists. Everyone else was a 16 year old douchebag boy.

The only real redeeming feature other than the CG is Rainn Wilson, who is amazing.

Drawn to Life is possibly the easiest DS game I've ever played, except for this stupid boss fight where I have died 80 million times at 75% of killing the stupid demon tree. EAT IT, TREE. I WILL END YOU. run screaming from a giant angler fish and cursed my stupid, useless starfish gun. The villagers thought this gun was amazing. I want my acorns back.

More importantly I am finally catching up on SGA after skipping two episodes (Really, a badly written kidnap scenario followed by a flashback episode? LAME.) and-oh my god. Michael/Teyla! I thought I was just being a nerd, but no, this is real! YES.

Also my LJ account expires this week (the paid part, anyway). I'll continue mirroring posts from my DW to LJ, but mostly this is the first step in my moving there. (Please ignore my wonky DW layout. I tried to make it better, and instead it got worse. I actually got stupidly confused by the layout editing options where with a straight up style sheet I would have been fine. How lame.)

Let's just say that in my family when I say, "I went to the mac store today" there is almost always a misunderstanding. My sister and mom will perk up and get really interested. "!! What did you buy???"

MK: Uh.. well, nothing really exciting. I mean, it's pretty expensive.
MICH: Sure, sure, but you bought something.
MK: Yeah, I got a cable for my--
MICH: Oh. You mean the Apple store. I thought you were buying make up.

The point is that two years ago my sister in law's best friend invited me to a M.A.C party. Apparently they close down the store and give you make overs while people drink and, I guess socialize with other ladies or gay men? That was the impression I got anyway. So I went, and we all got gussied up, and halfway through the evening someone in the chair next to me said "Daniel Jackson".

Usually when I hear something like that I assume they mean something other than Stargate or another fandom I'm in, but she continued on, talking about his ascension and the Goa'uld and suddenly I had to introduce myself and everything felt ten times more surreal than it already did. (Impressive, since honestly, otherwise there is no reason for me to be inside M.A.C when I could be inside the mac store.) It's disorienting hearing normal people talk about your fandom!

And that's why you need to read at least most of the introduction to this recs post over at [info - personal]thefourthvine's journal, where she goes to a physical therapy office and people talk Star Trek when she least expects it. Because sometimes I feel like "normal people" shouldn't be discussing fannish things like that, except that's stupid, and also, Star Trek belongs to the entire planet.

I picked up a Star Trek novel at the BMV today that has (apparently) almost the exact same plot as the movie (XI) but was written in 1985. We'll see how it is, but it looks kind of promising. Captain Spock! Angry!ensign!Kirk! Time-travelling Romulans!

Also tonight I am going to the Poison/Def Leopard concert. It's very OOC for me, but uh, we'll see what happens. And I made chocolate covered frozen bananas! They are delicious.

Remember back in the day you could make a Winamp skin with a simple generator, an image, and a few tweaks? Is there anything like that for Firefox?

I upgraded to 3.5 and suddenly none of my preferred themes work, everything available is ugly, and it occurs to me a Loco Roco theme would be both cute and effective!

I made a User Agent Switcher profile to convince the internet I was on Windows XP with Firefox 3.0 and it worked, but that doesn't mean I can actually install a half-decent theme. No, Firefox is ugly grey and full of crappy themes, apparently.

We seriously need a generator for this action.

Happy Canada Day. Festivities were cancelled in Toronto due to the insane strikes. Do you know why they're still striking? Because every day the strike continues the city saves a tonne of money because they get paid significantly more than the private sector people do. Which means that while the people are unhappy, the streets are dirty, and we can't have Canada Day, at least we're saving a few bucks during a recession.

They better take all the garbage I build up at the end of this. Maybe I'll collect extra garbage and dump it at City Hall, just because.

On a brighter note, reasons Canada is awesome: )

I'm sure there's other stuff, but in the meantime this will do. We should sit down for some Trivial Pursuit and sing a rousing rendition of Barrett's Privateers. It might also be a good day to check the secret post for some Canadian music, if you're so inclined.

It's shark season in Animal Crossing! I caught a shark, hammerhead, and an ocean sunfish the other day, and now frequently run into the museum to follow them around the tank. I really love looking at a shark's white under-belly. For some reason it reminds me of cats.

Also the BMV over by World's Biggest Bookstore had a bunch of 80s Star Trek novelizations for a dollar each in bins outside. You are likely unsurprised to find I bought four of them that sound promising.

Okay, I-- I know I'm not exactly famous for liking kids or babies, but listen--- there is a limit to how many babies you can pack on a streetcar before someone stabs you. I got on the streetcar today and three separate families of 2+ people got on, each with a stroller carrying a baby. And then they blocked every single seat on the left side of the car, so half of us couldn't move, couldn't get off the car, and the people in the aisle had nowhere to stand or move to let the trapped people out.

There should be a limit of one or fewer babies per streetcar. I hate those things.

MK: Weird! I ran into my cousin in the subway tonight on my way home, and then he--- he hugged me! I think he'd been drinking. It was weird. We don't hug! I mean on top of me not liking hugging, the entire family, you know-- we don't!
Jen: Em, Vulcans hug better than your family does.

MK: Remember that episode of How I Met Your Mother where you see Robin's father?
Jen: Oh yeah! I watched that and I thought, This is Emily's life! A mansion in the middle of nowhere, guns, the way he talks to her like she's not his daughter...
MK: More like an employee, or acquaintance.

At this point, Jen's cellphone rang with a text from her dad about how he was partying this weekend, and would (jokingly) steal anything not nailed down in their hotel room unless I could loan them a hammer in which case he would steal more.

In response I pulled up a typical e-mail exchange between my dad and I:

From: (dad's work address)
To: MEM
Subject: Reminder
Emily, today is Andy’s birthday. Secondly, have you completed your TFSA application and your application for a trading account at BMO Investorline? This is good timing.

So Jen's Uncle is a moderately famous actor over in the UK, currently in a show on the BBC and having been in a few others. Today Jen found a facebook group in support of making him the new Doctor Who. These are people who are fannish about one of my best friend's Uncles. It feels really strange to look at fandom from this side.

I used to think the Kirk Effect was something stupid that they wrote into TOS because it was back in the day. Then this happened:

MK: Mmm, no, I'd definitely prefer Captain Fine.
Jen: I'm much more attracted to Zachary Quinto -- he's totally my type -- but every time I see Kirk in the Captain's chair I think, "Mmm, Kirk".

Yeah. I mean, Captain Fine effect, sure, but no, it's the Kirk/Captain thing for her. Amazing.

Saturday I discovered something amazing. There is an HMV at Yonge & Dundas that I had always thought was kind of sad because they didn't have any good movies. I turns out there is a basement level (it looked sketchy, so I never approached those stairs) full of action and superhero movies. Who knew?

The thing is, it's basically where all the nerd movies are and when you start to head down the stairs there is a sudden and pungent aroma. An unfortunate one.

Remember how my sister hijacked my birthday dinner at mom's this year to introduce mom to her new boyfriend? Guess who's birthday dinner with dad we're having this coming Monday? At my favourite restaurant? Michelle's. Also half the purpose is so she can introduce dad to her new boyfriend. (Shock.)

The good news is she leaves the country at the end of the month to go teach in some tropical climate or something at which point I plan to arrange my own birthday dinner. PS, my birthday was in March.

Guys I blacked out classic emily style on the doctor, then puked all over their office, then all over Noreen's car when she came to get me because I can't drive like this. This is why I don't go outside in summer. Oh god. I'm on the bathroom floor so my face can make friends with the toilet bowl.

Edit: Okay, here's what happened now that I've slept for a few hours and feel a little better. I was in the middle of my checkup and this medical student was taking my history. He was feeling my neck to check my thyroid or whatever and all of a sudden my vision started going. So I said, "Uhh... I feel okay, but I'm blacking out".
Medical Student: "What?"
And then my vision was totally gone, and the next thing I know I'm waking up flat on my back and a nurse is in there with us.

So I had to keep laying down because every time I sat up I started to black out again, but they finished the basic exam. I kept saying, "I'm fine, I'm fine, this happens a few times a year" and they accepted that, left me to change back into my clothes.

....and then I started projectile vomiting. Which is, uh, less usual for me. Not entirely unusual since, like I said, this happens a few times a year, but never this violently.

At any rate, I called Nyo to come get me (thank goodness she was home and had a car) and the car ride was enough that I wound up puking down the side of it and on my neighbour's driveway (well, Mom's neighbour's drive). I actually think one of the common elements crew saw me, so I'm sure it'll be all over the neighbourhood by now. Then I slept for three hours and I still feel pretty crappy, so I guess I'm staying in Sauga tonight.

Man I hope this is just a regular attack and not some disgusting flu thing.

I'm at Mom's for a day and a half for a Doctor's appointment and maybe a haircut. I've been here half a day, slept, and today I found a little piece of home on me: A fleck of the varnish from the floor in my room in Toronto which is always peeling off.

Hey, little buddy! How long have you been riding my hip?

The Doctor's appointment, PS, is partly because I haven't had an annual physical in over two years (Oops.) and partly so I can make an appointment to make an appointment to make an appointment for genetic testing of my blood.
