Let's just say that in my family when I say, "I went to the mac store today" there is almost always a misunderstanding. My sister and mom will perk up and get really interested. "!! What did you buy???"
MK: Uh.. well, nothing really exciting. I mean, it's pretty expensive.
MICH: Sure, sure, but you bought
something.
MK: Yeah, I got a cable for my--
MICH: Oh. You mean the Apple store. I thought you were buying make up.
The point is that two years ago my sister in law's best friend invited me to a M.A.C party. Apparently they close down the store and give you make overs while people drink and, I guess socialize with other ladies or gay men? That was the impression I got anyway. So I went, and we all got gussied up, and halfway through the evening someone in the chair next to me said "Daniel Jackson".
Usually when I hear something like that I assume they mean something other than Stargate or another fandom I'm in, but she continued on, talking about his ascension and the Goa'uld and suddenly I had to introduce myself and everything felt ten times more surreal than it already did. (Impressive, since honestly, otherwise there is no reason for me to be inside M.A.C when I could be inside the mac store.) It's disorienting hearing normal people talk about your fandom!
And that's why you need to read
at least most of the introduction to this recs post over at
thefourthvine's journal, where she goes to a physical therapy office and people talk Star Trek when she least expects it. Because sometimes I feel like "normal people" shouldn't be discussing fannish things like that, except that's stupid, and also, Star Trek belongs to the entire planet.
( Links )I picked up a Star Trek novel at the BMV today that has (apparently) almost the exact same plot as the movie (XI) but was written in 1985. We'll see how it is, but it looks kind of promising. Captain Spock! Angry!ensign!Kirk! Time-travelling Romulans!
( Fic Recs: Star Trek TOR, Merlin )Also tonight I am going to the Poison/Def Leopard concert. It's very OOC for me, but uh, we'll see what happens. And I made chocolate covered frozen bananas! They are delicious.
